Gables Guest House is situated in the famous grass and wetland
area, where at least nine endemic species are found. We are within walking distance to the wetland and Beck's bird
hide. One looks out over the great Drakensberg escarpment
foothills and across the road sheep graze in the paddock.
Wakkerstroom is only 3 hours from Johannesburg and 4 hours
from Durban. It is also en route through a scenic drive into
Zululand to the game reserves ( Ithlala, Umfolozi / Hluhluwe &
Mkuze ), passing some of historical Zulu and Anglo Boer War
sites.
The weather is mild and embracing in winter, with occasional
snow falling in late winter. Summer days are warm, averaging
24 decrees, followed by thunderstorms, leaving great
Columbus
cloud formations + 40,000 ft. , which turn flame colour when
the sun sets.
We are a BIRDER FRIENDLY ESTABLISHMENT, which
means we cater especially for birders' needs. Your hostess
is Bronwen Mellor, a leading bird artist, who can make your stay
so much more attractive by helping you to enjoy the best of bird
watching
